Summary: It is just two hundred years since the first books and newspapers were published in Sydney. This book explores how George Howe, a convict, become Australia's first official Government Printer and newspaper publisher. Born in 1771 on the island of St Kitts in the West Indies, he was christened Robert Howe. As a young man he traveled to London to further his career as a printer, working for a period at the Times and taking on the alias George Happy (or Happy George) at the time of conviction for theft. Transported to Australia for his crime, on a ship whose passengers were stricken with typhus, he arrived in Sydney a convict and a widower accompanied by his young son Robert.

This is more than just another tale of a convict made good. Gwenda Robb vividly highlights the social history of Howe's life, against the background of Australia's growth from a convict settlement to a self-governing colony. And despite a frustrating lack of documentary evidence, she succeeds admirably in revealing both personal and professional sides of the mysterious but ingenious man.
