Summary: The first settlement in the Orbost district took place in 1842, when Mr Peter IMLAY brought cattle down from New South Wales. He settled on the eastern side of the Snowy River where the township of Orbost now stands.
In 1843 Mr Archibald McLEOD of Skye, came to Gippsland, acquired the Newmerella and Snowy River runs from IMLAY, brought the Imlay brand and named the Run Orbost.
