Summary: William McCLATCHIE (variants- McLATCHIE or McCLUTCHIE) was born 16 March 1818 in Rotherhithe, England to James McCLATCHIE and Jane GARDINER. He travelled to Chatham Island in 1839 on board Matilda and managed a farm there, Captained merchant sailing ships trading with New South Wales and New Zealand. In approximately 1843 he was "gifted" the daughter of a high-ranking Maori - Uru-Kapina PAUTU and a son was born in 1844 named Tamati aka William but his mother died soon after.
