Summary: "The idea of a railway being built in NSW became a reality from the humble beginnings of private enterprise with Government support. The first provisional company was called the Australian, Southern and Western Railway Company; a few months later the name was changed to Sydney Tramroad and Railway Company. When the company was incorporated in 1850 it was known as Sydney Railway Company. Around the same time in the Newcastle and Hunter Valley areas businessmen and politicians also saw the benefits of upgrading their current rail system (using a horse-drawn railway) to a more modern form of transporting the coal from the mines to the port for shipping. So the Hunter River Railway Company was formed. Their plans included a passenger network and heavy rail from the Port of Newcastle to Maitland (completed in 1857). Because of the scale of the projects in Sydney and the Newcastle area, and the amount of labour required, skilled and unskilled labour was sourced in England and over 1,000 men and boys reached NSW, many with families, on 9 ships from 1853 to1855."--Introduction.
