"The english poor law administration throughout the eighteenth century was dominated by the settlement laws where it was enacted that every person had one parish in which he or she had a settlement and the right to parish relief".
The historical background, the power of parish officers to remove newcomers (strangers) likely to become chargeable to the parish; certain exemptions; how people could acquire a settlement. Further references.
On the surviving settlement certificates from these 4 parishes, although more are coming to light.
A Settlement certificates gives: name of person and his family (if any) who have moved to another parish, parish of legal settlement, where he has come from, signed by church wardens, overseers of the poor and "allowed" by two Justices of the Peace
