Summary: The Fleet Prison was established in the 12th century, but after 1655, it was primarily used to confine debtors and those in contempt of court. There were too many inmates for the prison, and many were permitted to reside in the Rules (or Liberties) of the Fleet, an area outside the prison bounded by Ludgate Hill, Old Bailey, Farringdon Street and Fleet Lane. The Fleet remained a prison until its closure in 1842, but from about 1700 to 1754, the prison and Rules were also the most famous (or infamous) centre for clandestine marriages in England. The Fleet registers records about 250,000 marriages as having taken place between 1690 and 1754.
