Summary: Half a dozen times a year and more the regular course of a Church service would be interrupted, in due observance of the directions of the rubric, by the reading of 'briefs', urging the worshippers to benevolent contributions towards the objects for which the brief was issued. An Act of 1828 gave the death blow to the venerable system of gathering alms under the sovereign's command. This book give a complete list of briefs 1642-1828.
