This history has been compiled from information made available by members of the Coates family, company records and employees of the company. Coates Brothers was set up in 1877 by John and George Coates, sons of Henry Coates of Clapham. The business was initially set up as printers' suppliers and chemical merchants, but subsequently as manufacturers of printing inks and varnish. By 1970, the business had a turnover of over seventy five million pounds, with companies in Britain, Ireland, Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia.
