Summary: "Scottish immigration has had a major influence in shaping the Australia we now know. This book, while being about a family of Camerons, will be of interest to anyone interested in the Scottish Highlands and Australian colonial history. Archer relates the cooling of the climate from medieval times to the Highlands being less conducive to food production. The book looks at how the physical and natural environment drives human behaviour and influences the aspirations of families for their next generation. Economic influences that caused the Cameron family to emigrate were a consequence of national and international movements, primarily brought about by the Industrial Revolution which created demand for wool. The introduction of sheep drove the Aboriginal Peoples of the Limestone Plains from their lands, just as the sheep had driven the Camerons from the Highlands. No one knew that the sheep and large and small landowners would ultimately be displaced by a city and Federal Territory. Donald and Ann Cameron had thirteen children, the twelfth being the author's great grandmother. The book describes the known Cameron diaspora especially relating to those in the locality and their involvement in the Limestone Plains and later Canberra." -- Back cover.
