Summary:
|
In 1852 John SHEPHERD and Eliza RYMAN, the butcher and the cook of the title, married in London and then took the momentous decision to leave behind their native land and make a hazardous voyage to Melbourne on the ship Plantagenet, arriving in 1853 to begin their new life. This book relates the story of their forebears in the couple's home villages in Hertfordshire and Gloucestershire and their APPLEYARD, MAJOR, HICKS and FARMER families. Their early days in the Colony are detailed and then the narrative follows Eliza's life after John's untimely death aged only 39. Their descendants now number many hundreds, and this book tells some of their stories too.
