Summary: Annotation. "Privates James and John Birch disembarked in Melbourne along with their fellow 12th Regiment troops in October 1854. After only a few weeks the twins would forever go their separate ways, John to Ballarat to help quell the gold diggers' uprising at Eureka, James to stay with the army until 1861 after service in Tasmania and New Zealand. After unceremonious sackings from jobs as a prison warder and policeman in Sydney, James, with the support of his wife Mary Ann, embarked on a teaching career through isolated communities in rural New South Wales. Despite his involvement in a succession of scandals, problems with drink and ill health, and constant squabbles with the authorities, James and Mary Ann showed great resilience to raise their family under trying circumstances. Meanwhile, John deserted the army and led an itinerant existence in the Victorian goldfields. The Betula Saga tells their stories." -- back cover.
