How did South Australia become the nation's first democracy? The authorseeks to answer this question by examining the attitudes, customs and laws in Dover, where his own immigrant ancestor originated, and in the new colony of South Australia.
The author is a direct descendant of Richard Hamilton, a tailor who arrived with his family aboard the Katherine Stewart Forbes with the South Australian Company on 17 October 1837, only a few months after the initial establishment of the colony.
