Wreckers smugglers and pirates in south eastern Australian waters / Jack Loney.
Call No: A3/21/57
Author: Loney, J. K. (Jack Kenneth), 1925-1995. ;
Publisher: Portarlington, Vic. : Portarlington, Vic. : Marine History, 1989. 1989.
Subject: Australia - ships & shipping ;
Material Type: Book
Pagination: v, 106 p. : ill., ports., maps ; 24 cm.
Notes: Includes index.
Bibliography: p. 102-103.
Public Note: Nick Vine Hall Bequest
Summary: Few Australian wreckers, smugglers or pirates were apprehended and appeared in court. The resulting dearth of information in archives and other official institutions necessitated research in newspaper files, and the use of reminiscences of pioneer settlers and tales handed down over generations. The author has compiled information on nearly forty wrecks. Also included is information on other major crimes at sea, eg the mutiny at Geelong in 1852.
