Summary: Caroline CHISHOLM (1808-1877), Christian philanthropist and social reformer, is generally regarded as the greatest of women pioneers in the history of Australia. She and her husband, a Lieutenant in the British Army in India, arrived in New South Wales in the late 1830s. Mrs Chisholm was touched by the plight of women and girls who were dumped, homeless and destitute, on the wharves of Sydney. Her persistent appeals to the public and government, in defiance of the conventions of the Victorian age, resulted in the settling of an estimated 11,000 people on the land in New South Wales.
