Clonmel : disaster to discovery / text by Peter Harvey.
Call No: C3/21/Pam.2
Author: Harvey, Peter ;
Publisher: Victoria, Australia : Heritage Council Victoria 1999.
Subject: Victoria - ships and shipping ;
Material Type: Pamphlet
Pagination: 28 p. ill. (some col.), maps ; 21 cm.
Summary: The wreck of the luxurious steamer 'Clonmel' on the first day of 1841 on a sand bar at the entrance to what is now known as Port Albert was seen as a mahor setback to the development of intra-colonial transport and a significant blow to the moral of the people of the young Australian colonies. On a more positive note, the wreck led to the discovery of Port Alkbert and the subsequent opening up of the East Gippsland region for trade and agriculture. Although the wreck was relatively quickly forgotten, the impact of the discovery of the Port on the development of trade and agriculture lasted for decades.
