Paupers were examined to discover their last legal place of settlement which was gained by birth, 10 pound leasehold tenancy, apprenticeship, working in the parish for one year, serving as a parish officer for one year or paying parish rates. Women took their husband's settlement and children their father's. Bastards gained settlement in their place of birth until 1743, after that date they took their mother's settlement.
